Many conventions run an event or two in the days immediately before the convention. One typical event is a private lunch for all the guests and committee, to give them a chance to meet each other. Typically the convention pays at least for the guests. This event helps your guests meet some people, helps them enjoy their stay, rewards your committee (who often will be too busy to spend as much time as they would like with the guests), and can help make things run smoothly. Some conventions also have a public guest dinner one or two days before the convention. This gives fans who really want to meet a guest an opportunity to ensure they will, and can be used as a fundraising event.
