New page

The Atheling (formally the William Atheling Jr. Award for Criticism or Review) is an award for excellence by Australians in critical writing about science fiction, fantasy or horror. The award is named for the pseudonym used by American author James Blish for his critical writing.

History
The award was first presented as part of the Ditmar Award ceremony, at Bofcon, the 15th Australian National Science Fiction Convention in Melbourne in August 1976. While not formally a Ditmar Award, the Atheling has continued to be nominated, voted on and presented along with the Ditmars, and winners traditionally receive the same trophy and accoutrement provided to winners of the Ditmars.
